To all our LIAF family members and friends:
Welcome to the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation (LIAF) web site. We are pleased to support families and friends throughout Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn and Queens with hands-on programs and services that weekly touch over 530 people directly with client and caregiver support groups, a social model adult day program, cognitive stimulation and socialization programs and in-home respite, and over a million people annually through visits to our web site, receipt of our newsletter, conferences, workshops and special events. We are here to answer your questions, provide guidance as you cope with diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, and give you referrals to the services you need, whether medical, legal or other services required.
We hope that this web site will give you the assistance you need and also give you a sense of our LIAF family in action. Just to give you a flavor of what transpires weekly at LIAF:
Good spirits are generated at LIAF by our Al’z Club, grown to over 30 active members. We have fun singing songs from the Jazz and Big Band Eras. LIAF rings with “Toot, Toot, Tootsie,” “Embraceable You,” and “The Bugle Boys of Company B.” Some are brave enough to dance while we sing! And the Tuesday and Wednesday early stage support groups have a friendly competition as to which group knows the most lyrics.
Memory Lane Club (MLC) celebrates Halloween with costumes, painted pumpkins and home made tacos. MLC hosts an Annual LIAF Thanksgiving feast, and the members and staff cook – not to mention eat! The fall and winter months seem to prompt us to cook frequently – as The Happy Days Club of middle stage clients often sets their talents to baking bread or making various soups. And our in-home respite team brings many of these activities to Alzheimer’s clients at their home while their family caregiver gets time-off to visit the doctor, go to the supermarket, the dentist or the hairdresser.
We host social events, and annually invite all client and caregiver support groups to join us at the Valentine’s Dance, Spring Fling, Summer BBQ, and Fall Festival, sharing pot luck lunches, music, dancing and fellowship with each other. We support each other in such camaraderie, and we also link hands to light candles of remembrance in honor of our loved ones, as we gather each November for LIAF’s annual Candle Lighting commemorating National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month.
To help educate on Alzheimer’s disease, we host conferences and workshops, memory screenings, and trainings on various topics, as how to deal with challenging behaviors or what’s new in Medicaid law.
We are most appreciative for public and private sector funding, as well as for donations from generous individuals, which make it possible for us to provide the various services that help our Alzheimer’s community. Please remember that 85 cents of every dollar donated goes to our programs.
Please visit this site frequently to read what’s new at LIAF. To find out more about any of our LIAF programs and services contact us and our wonderful staff will be glad to assist you.
Sincerely,
The LIAF family
